Five Mindset Shifts That Helped Me Take Control of My Anxiety

Do you often feel like something bad is always lurking around the corner? Do you spend too much time worrying about things that may never happen?

Anxiety has many causes. Even someone with no history of mental health issues can develop anxiety in high-stress environments — like a war zone. On the flip side, some people can experience intense anxiety even when they’re in a safe, stable environment with loving support around them. Why? Because anxiety isn’t always tied to external circumstances. Often, it’s about how your brain processes and interprets situations.

Punching Through My Limits

When I hit 28, life felt like an endless loop of anxiety and overthinking. I was stuck in my own head, overanalyzing everything, from work emails to casual conversations. My anxiety was like a shadow I couldn’t shake, and even though I tried meditation, journaling, and the usual “calm your mind” techniques, nothing seemed to stick.

As the child of two Vietnamese war refugees, I grew up surrounded by fear, anxiety, and emotional tension — but none of it was ever named. I thought it was normal to feel on edge all the time, to brace for disaster over the smallest things.
