The False Comfort of Qualifications For years, I wore my pharmacy degree like a badge of honor. But unknowingly, it also became a pair of invisible handcuffs.

My degree pointed me toward one obvious writing path: healthcare. It made sense—I had the credentials, the formal knowledge, and what many saw as “credibility.” So I leaned in. I became a health writer, not because I didn’t enjoy it, but because I believed it was the only space where I belonged.
